We often hear about air pollution, and we normally associate it with outdoor air. But the truth is, the air we breathe indoors can be even more polluted than the outdoor air. Poor indoor air quality (IAQ) can affect your mood and health. But, how do you know if the indoor air quality in your Martinez, Georgia, home is poor? Here are three signs that indicate poor IAQ.
Indoor Air Humidity Issues
Both high and low humidity levels cause health issues. In the summer or winter months, is there condensation on your windows? This is a sign of high humidity in your home. If your HVAC system shows a humidity level of over 55 percent, your home is too humid. This excessive moisture increases the risk of unhealthy biological growth and respiratory issues. Your AC system will remove some of the excess moisture, but it can’t always keep up. A dehumidifier will help to keep moisture at bay.
Sick at Home
Do you or one of your family members suffer from allergies or cold symptoms when you’re at home but feel better when you leave your house? If so, your IAQ is probably the cause. Asthma, upper respiratory problems, and allergies become obvious or even become worse by indoor airborne pollutants, allergens, or toxins.
Consider investing in an air purifier; it’ll clean the air in your home and trap many allergens such as dust, pet dander, and pollen before you can breathe them in.
Indoor Air and Bad Odors
You know the familiar scents in your home, so when you smell something going sour without a reasonable explanation, it is time to investigate. Bad odors are a sign of poor IAQ that can’t be covered up with air freshener. The odor could be due to contaminants in the air as a result of a dirty air filter, or clogged ducts. This will have a negative effect on your IAQ. Clean or change your air filter, or call us for a professional duct cleaning.
