The Basics of AC Repair

Our air conditioning unit works actually very close to our refrigerators.  That’s excluding the insulation box.  To produce cool air, it utilizes Freon.  This cools the air as the machine goes through the evaporation cycle.  Here, Freon goes through an expansion valve then evaporates into cold gas.  This cold gas then goes through coils allowing it to absorb heat and cool down the room temperature.

Common Air Conditioning Repair

One of the most common problems that homeowners encounter with their air conditioning units is that the machine is working but the compressor isn’t.  This may have been caused by a burnt compressor or perhaps a wire that has shorted.  Another possible cause for this is that the compressor has lost its overload protector or a broken down start capacitor.  With these types of problems, you can expect your AC repairman to do the following to your AC unit:

•    adjust the refrigerant charge
•    condenser oil cleaning
•    replace the compressor or capacitor.

The compressor and the capacitor are sealed parts of an air conditioning unit and it’s something that only a professional should touch to ensure that the repairs being performed are done correctly.

Leaks are also common problems that require air conditioning repairs.  Among the causes of leaks are:

•    Clogged or stopped up drains
•    coil pan rusts
•    freezing up of the air conditioning unit.

For problems like the air conditioner freezing up, one move that you can do is to turn of the unit off for a couple of hours until the ice has completely thawed.  If this doesn’t solve your problem, then you need to call your repairman. Chances are there are some parts that need replacing.

The outer part of your air conditioning unit is also prone to problems over time.  If the machine is not cooling off your room, you might need to check on the outer portion of the unit as well.

Air Conditioning Repair Costs

Depending on the problem of your air conditioning unit, AC repair costs will vary.  These costs may be prevented if your unit is well maintained.  While there are many do-it-yourself methods that can be applied whenever you’re experiencing problems with your air conditioning unit, it is still best to have AC repairs done by a professional.

This way, you’re not only preserving and prolonging the life span of your AC unit.  You’re also ensuring the safety of your entire family since professionals are handling the job for you.  Be sure to apply some scrutiny on your search for AC repair companies and you’re sure to get the best value for your money in the process.
