It’s frustrating when a family fights over the temperature in your Augusta, Georgia, home. Instead of having constant battles, find a way to compromise on the temperature and come up with a solution where everyone can feel comfortable in the home this winter.
Find a Compromise
Instead of continually changing the thermostat back and forth, sit down with your family and discuss everyone’s concerns. If you are always colder than your spouse, invest in some cozy house clothes and slippers instead of turning up the heat. Discuss the temperature settings in your house, and then compromise between everyone’s ideal temperature. Also, take the time to discuss energy efficiency and why it’s problematic to swing the temperature settings constantly.
Invest in Space Heaters
If you or someone in your family is always cold, consider getting a small space heater for their room instead of fighting over the thermostat temperature. Heated blankets are also a nice alternative at night. Just take precautions when using space heaters and electric blankets. Don’t ever use an electric blanket for a baby or a small child, and make sure to turn off all electric heaters when not in the room.
Consider Alternative Concerns
There are other reasons people might change the thermostat in the house besides just their preference. Double check to make sure your heater is working efficiently and correctly. Walk through your home and make sure all the vents are open and none are covered by furniture, carpet, or wallpaper.
If one room is a different temperature, consider adding insulation in that room or have an HVAC contractor come in to explain other reasons causing the concern. You might find your HVAC system is causing uneven heating or cooling in your home which is why one person might want the temperature higher or lower than the rest of the family.
